A series of 4-aryl-3-cyano-1,1-diphenyl-2-azabuta-1,3-dienes (3-30) has been prepared by phase-transfer catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of N-(diphenylmethylidene)aminoacetonitrile with aromatic aldehydes.The reactions with benzaldehyde and with para- and meta-substituted benzaldehydes proceed with high stereoselectivity, while mixtures of (E)- and (Z)-isomers are isolated with some ortho-substituted aldehydes.Configurational assignment has been made by single crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses, 1H NMR, and IR spectra.
