Facile and convenient one-pot cascade/tandem approaches for the syntheses of privileged medicinal scaffolds, 12-aryl-2,3,4,12-tetrahydrobenzo[b]xanthene- 1,6,11-trione derivatives, have been reported under extremely mild reaction conditions using a catalytic amount of H2SO4 in water or in the presence of the acidic ionic liquid bmim[HSO4], which could be recycled. An efficient synthesis of benzoxanthene, pyrimidoquinoline, pyrimidochromene and pyrazolopyridine fused heterocycles by condensation of aromatic aldehydes, 2- hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone/ 6-amino-1,3-dimethyl uracil/ 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid/ 5-amino-3-methyl-1-phenylpyrazole and 5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-dione/5- methylcyclohexane-1,3-dione/ cyclohexane-1,3-dione/cyclopentane-1,3-dione has been developed using [NMP]H2PO4 as a highly efficient reaction medium and catalyst. All the reactions proceeded smoothly and gave corresponding products in high yield after a simple workup.
