Oxasulfuron is used as a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide for controlling a wide range of weeds in soybeans. It is effective against A theophrasti, X. strumarium, Amaranthus spp., A. artemisiifolia, A. trifida, Bidens pilosa, Cyperus esculentus, Polygonum pensylvanicum, Sorghum bicolor, E. crus-galli, Helianthus annuus, Sesbania exaltata, and Ipomoea spp. The herbicide provides greater than 80% control at application rates of 66-92 g a.i. ha-1. Its selectivity is attributed to the rapid metabolization of the compound in the target crop, minimizing potential harm to the crop itself.

The invention relates to a method for producing a solid herbicide formulation containing a) a herbicide from the group of sulfonylurea, or the salts thereof which are useful in the agricultural domain, b) optionally at least one other herbicide, c) optionally a safener, and d) at least one formulation adjuvant. A suspension is formed in water, consisting of the sulfonylurea a), optionally at least one other herbicide b), optionally a safener c) and at least one formulation adjuvant d). The suspension is adjusted to a pH value between 6.5 and 8 by adding an acid or a base, and is then dried to obtain the solid formulation.

The invention relates to a process for the prepn of ortho-sulfocarboxylic acids, which comprises: a) in a first reaction step, diazotizing an aromatic o-aminosulfonic acid in the presence of an acid and nitrite in water, in an organic solvent or in a mixture thereof, to an o-diazonium sulfonate, and, b) in a second reaction step, reacting the o-diazonium sulfonate in the presence of a palladium catalyst in water, in an organic solvent or in a mixture thereof, with carbon monoxide, under overpressure, to an aromatic o-sulfocarboxylic acid. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of sulfonylureas using o-sulfocarboxylic acids as intermediates. Thus, 4-methoxyaniline-2-sulfonic acid was diazotized and treated with CO to give 97% 4-methoxybenzoic acid 2-sulfonic acid.
