Pentakis(3,6-anhydro)-α-cyclodextrin and three regioisomers of tetrakis(3,6-anhydro)-α-cyclodextrin were synthesized from the corresponding 6-O-sulfonates to investigate the relationship among the molecular geometry, hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity balance, and inclusion behavior of CD. Each of the CD derivatives exhibited characteristic cation binding ability reflecting the unique molecular structure.

Hexakis(6-O-tosyl)-α-cyclodextrin and hexakis(6-O-(2-naphthalenesulfonyl)-α-cyclodextrin were prepared selectively through the reaction of α-cyclodextrin by use of bis(tributylstannyl) oxide and the corresponding sulfonyl chloride in 32.4 and 77.9%, respectively.
