A novel protocol for acid ionic liquid promoted C(sp3)-H bond functionalization of alkyl azaarenes and nucleophilic addition to aldehydes was developed in good to excellent yields, which provides an efficient approach for the synthesis of alkyl-substituted azaarene derivatives.
