A tetradentate ligand, L, derived from a bowl-shaped calixresorcinarene by incorporation of four phosphonite donors, has been used in the synthesis of several tetragold(I) and tetracopper(I) complexes, such as and +-; the halide inclusion found for the copper complexes is unique in calixarene chemistry.
