Stability of the macrodiolide antibiotic vermiculin in organic solvents

Vermiculin heated in acetic acid afforded [2 E, 2' E, 7 S, 7' E]-4,9-dioxo-7-(4'9'-dioxo-2',7'-decadienoyloxy)-2-decenoic acid as an intermediate which was further splitted into [2 E, 7 E]-4,9-dioxo-2,7-decadienoic acid. After a 90 min reflux in boiling acetic acid and acetonitrile the loss of vermiculin was 91.5% and 18.1%, respectively; no degradation was observed in chloroforme.
