The invention relates to the technical field of preparation of polyhydroxy phenolic substances, and provides a preparation method of 4, 6-bis [1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methyl ethyl]-1, 3-benzenediol, which comprises the following steps: dissolving 4-isopropenyl phenol and/or a 4-isopropenyl phenol linear dimer and resorcinol in a protonic solvent or a non-protonic solvent; adopting a strong acid ion exchange resin for catalysis, and obtaining 4, 6-bis [1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methyl ethyl]-1, 3-benzenediol by subjecting a reaction solution obtained after the reaction to post-treatment procedures such as concentration, extraction and devitrification. The preparation method has the characteristics of simplicity, small environmental pollution, small harm to human health and low requirements on equipment, meanwhile, the used solvent is a low-toxicity solvent, and the strongly acidic ion exchange resin added in the reaction process can be recycled; the method is safer, more economical and more practical, and better meets the requirements of industrial production.
