It is a colorless, non-flammable gas with a faint ethereal odor. 1,2-Dichloro-1,1,2,3-tetrafluoropropane is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pump systems, as well as a blowing agent for foams and aerosol propellants. However, due to its ozone-depleting and global warming potential, it has been phased out of use in many countries and is listed as a controlled substance under the Montreal Protocol. Its use is now being replaced by more environmentally friendly alternatives.
