Photoirradiation of powdered inclusion compounds of N-(aryloylmethyl)-δ-valerolactams with optically active host compound in a water suspension gave 7-aryl-7-hydroxy-1-azabicyclooctan-2-one derivatives of high optical purities.

The photocyclisation of substituted N-phenacyl lactams led to the functionalized highly strained 1-azabicyclo alkanes (n=3,4,5), in good yields.Their easy transformation into monocyclic compounds have been studied.
