Uses
1. Used in Hygrometers:
Cobalt(II) Iodide is used as a moisture and humidity indicator in hygrometers. Its color change properties make it an effective tool for measuring the presence of water in the air.
2. Used in Determination of Water in Organic Solvents:
Anhydrous Cobalt(II) Iodide is sometimes used to test for the presence of water in various solvents, providing a visual indication of water content.
3. Used as a Catalyst:
Cobalt(II) Iodide is used as a catalyst in chemical reactions, such as carbonylations. It also catalyzes the reaction of diketene with Grignard reagents, which is useful for the synthesis of terpenoids.
4. Used in Different Industries:
a. Chemical Industry:
COBALT(II) IODIDE is used as a catalyst for carbonylations and the synthesis of terpenoids, facilitating important chemical reactions in the production of various compounds.
b. Analytical Industry:
COBALT(II) IODIDE is used as a moisture and humidity indicator, helping to determine the water content in organic solvents and providing valuable information for quality control and research purposes.
Physical and Chemical Properties:
Cobalt(II) Iodide is a brownish-red crystalline powder that is highly hygroscopic. The α-form is a black hexagonal crystal with a density of 5.58 g/cm3, while the β-form is a yellow powder with a density of 5.45 g/cm3. The hexahydrate form is red hexagonal crystals with a density of 2.90 g/cm3. Cobalt(II) Iodide is soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, and ether, forming colored solutions. The aqueous solution turns red below 20°C and green above this temperature, while the salt forms a blue solution in ethanol, chloroform, and ether. When heated to decomposition, it may emit toxic fumes of iodine and oxides of nitrogen.
Preparation
Cobalt(II) iodide is prepared by heating cobalt powder in a stream of hydrogen iodide at 400 to 450°C:
Co + 2HI → CoI2 + H2
The product obtained is the black crystalline α-form.
Cobalt(II) iodide also may be made by heating cobalt powder with iodine vapor.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 15238-00-3 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,5,2,3 and 8 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 0 and 0 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 15238-00:
(7*1)+(6*5)+(5*2)+(4*3)+(3*8)+(2*0)+(1*0)=83
83 % 10 = 3
So 15238-00-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
