The reaction of 2-aryl-1H-indole-3-carboxaldehydes with substituted acetophenones in ethanolic sodium hydroxide gives the indole chalcones (1a-c) which on subsequent treatment with hydrazine hydrate, ethyl cyanoacetate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride furnish the products IIa-d, IVa and Va respectively.The compounds IIa,b on reaction with formaldehyde yield IIa,b.The resulting products have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, PMR, 19F NMR and mass spectral data.They have also been screened for their antifungal and antibacterial activities.
