The reaction of (PPh4)2[Mn3(CO)12(μ-H)] with ClHgm in tetrahydrofuran gives good yields of the new pentanuclear clusters (PPh4)[Mn3(CO)12(μ 3-H)(μ-Hg(m))] (m = Mo(CO)3Cp (1a), W(CO)3Cp (1b), Mn(CO)5 (1c), Co(CO)4 (1d), Fe(CO)2Cp (1e)). The structure of 1a has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Crystals are triclinic, space group P1 with Z = 2 in a unit cell of dimensions a = 12.511(8) A?, b = 13.604(9) A?, c = 15.200(8) A?, α = 74.20(2)°, β = 70.08(2)°, and γ = 88.74(2)°. The structure has been solved from diffractometer data by direct and Fourier methods and refined by blocked full-matrix least-squares methods on the basis of 7351 observed reflections to R and Rw values of 0.0436 and 0.0601, respectively. The structure is characterized by a roughly planar pentanuclear MoHgMn3 metal core consisting of a Hg-Mn3 triangulated rhomboidal framework with the Mo atom in plane spiked to the Hg atom. Although the hydride could not be located unambiguously, qualitative MO analysis indicates that it should be located inside the Mn3Hg rhombus, probably bonded to its Mn3 triangle. Polychlorophenyl bimetallic clusters, (PPh4)[Mn3(CO)12(μ3-H)(μ-HgR)] (R = C6Cl5 (3a), 2,3,4,6-C6HCl4 (3b), 2,4,6-C6H2Cl3 (3c)), were obtained as the sole isolable products by allowing the salt (PPh4)2-[Mn3(CO)12(μ-H)] to react with ClHgR. 3a reacts in tetrahydrofuran with 1 equiv of [Pt-(C2H4)(PPh3)2], affording the new insertion product (PPh4)[Mn3(CO)12(μ 3-H)(μ-Hg{Pt(C6Cl5)-(PPh3) 2})] (4), which represents a new class of Hg-Pt-R insertion reaction.
