The corresponding diamides were obtained on reacting N-methyl(phenyl, p-tolyl)sulfonyl-1,4-phenylenediamines and 1,4-diamino-naphthalenes with stearic and palmitic acid chlorides.Oxidation of these amides with lead tetracetate leads to the corresponding N-methyl(phenyl, p-tolyl)-N'-stearoyl-(palmitoyl)-1,4-quinone diimines.Naphthoquinone diimides in which the long chain acyl residue is spatially removed from the quinonoid system were prepared analogously. The dissociation constants and relative electron affinities of the complexes were determined from spectroscopic data when studying the charge transfer complexes of the quinonoid compounds obtained with pyrene in chloroform. The values obtained are discussed from the point of view of the effect of electronic and steric factors on complex formation. The electron-acceptor properties of the quinone diimides were also investigated by polarographic reduction.
