General Description

Polonium-211 (211Po) is a radioactive isotope of polonium, a rare and highly toxic element. It is produced through the decay of radium-211, and has a half-life of about 0.516 seconds. Due to its short half-life, polonium-211 is primarily studied for its use in cancer therapy, particularly for targeting and destroying cancer cells. It emits alpha particles, which are highly effective at damaging cancerous tissues while minimizing damage to healthy cells. However, its extreme toxicity and high cost limit its use to very specific medical applications. Additionally, polonium-211 has been infamously associated with the poisoning of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in 2006, resulting in international notoriety for the chemical and its potential use as a lethal poison.
