A Remarkably Simple Hybrid Surfactant-NHC Ligand, Its Gold-Complex, and Application in Micellar Catalysis

A combination of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and a structurally simple surfactant has been realized, the hybrid surfactant-NHC. The related gold complex was synthesized, fully characterized, and applied in catalysis. This remarkably simple strategy allows, in combination with a co-surfactant, the application of gold catalysis in water. Just merge it! The hybrid of a surfactant and an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand is reported and applied for the synthesis of the derived gold complex (see scheme). The new resulting NHC-based metallosurfactant can interact with surfactants to form micelles and allows micellar catalysis for gold catalysis in water.

The stabilization of high oxidation state nanoparticles by N-heterocyclic carbenes is reported. Such nanoparticles represent an important subset in the field of nanoparticles, with different and more challenging requirements for suitable ligands compared to elemental metal nanoparticles. N-Heterocyclic carbene coated NaYF4:Yb,Tm upconversion nanoparticles were synthesized by a ligand-exchange reaction from a well-defined precursor. This new photoactive material was characterized in detail and employed in the activation of photoresponsive molecules by low-intensity near-infrared light (λ=980 nm).

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) represent a leading class of ligands in organometallic chemistry, but have been rarely exploited as stabilizers for metal nanoparticles (NPs). We report the first example of NHC stabilized Pd-NPs that demonstrate long term stability. These NHC Pd-NPs were synthesized by a facile ligand exchange protocol using rationally designed long chained NHCs (LC-NHCs). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the surface modification of Pd-NPs results in significant chemoselectivity in a model reaction. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2014.
