Starting from natural (-)-menthol the diazo-β-ketoester 15, 15a, 28, 29 and 30 were obtained.These compound were cyclized to the mixture of β-ketoesters under influence of rhodium diacetate.It was found that stereoselectivity of the cyclization process could be controlled in a modest range by changing the alkoxy residue in the diazo-β-ketoesters.The major β-ketoester 33, a ring D building block of 24S-hydroxy vitamin D3 was used for the synthesis of CD-fragment of 24S-hydroxy vitamin D3 .
