It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong, pungent odor. 1-Butanethiol, 3,3-dimethyl- is a derivative of butane, featuring a thiol functional group (-SH) at the first carbon position and two methyl groups (-CH3) attached to the third carbon. 1-Butanethiol, 3,3-dimethyl- is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various organic compounds, as well as a reagent in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Due to its unpleasant smell, it is also used as an odorant in natural gas to help detect leaks.
