The synthesis of the title compounds by basic elimination on the O-derivatives of unsubstituted and α-methylated β-hydroxy-γ,γ-dialkoxysulfoxides is reported. The study of the stereoselectivity of DIBAL and DIBAL/ZnI2 reductions of the starting β-ketosulfoxides and their α-methylated derivatives is also presented.

-4-p-Tolylsulfinyl-1-X-1,3-butadienes 1 (X = CO2Me, CN, PO(OEt)2, SO2Ph, SEt) are synthesized from a common starting material, -3-p-tolylsulfinyl-2-propenal 2, through a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction with the phosphonate (XCH2PO(OEt)2).The synthesis of 2 is also described.
