The kinetics of the reaction of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine with 4,4'-dimethylbenzophenone in solutions of hydrogen chloride in ethanol were investigated by electronic spectroscopy. It was established that the degree of reaction of the reagents depends on their concentrations and also on the concentrations of hydrochloric acid and water. The slow stage of the forward reaction is nucleophilic attack by the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine on the protonated 4,4'-dimethylbenzophenone.On the basis of the proposed kinetic scheme of the reactions an equation was obtained for the rate of the forward reaction which quantitatively describes the accumulation of the reaction product (the respective hydrazone).
