Unsubstituted and substituted 2-hydroxynaphthazarins (2,5,8-trihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones) under conditions of mild acid catalysis smoothly react with citral to form corresponding 6,9-dihydroxy-2-methyl-2-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-2H-naphthopyran-5,10-diones.Derivatives of 2,5,8-trihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone 1-imine under the same conditions yield 10-amino-5-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-2H-naphthopyran-6,9-diones.
