A stable heterogeneous palladium catalysts, the waste eggshell membrane (ESM) anchored Pd complex, was synthesized by a simple and green technique. The catalyst obtained can display an outstanding catalytic activity for Suzuki and Heck coupling reactions in water media. The reactions of various aryl halides with aryl boronic acids and terminal alkenes provided the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. More importantly, this novel and efficient catalyst with high stability can be easily reused for at least twelve times with no decrease of the catalytic activity, performing an endurable and wide tolerance of the substrates. Facile synthesis, high catalytic activity, and recyclability make these catalysts interesting for further studies.

Triphenylethylene-based fluorophores: Facile preparation and full-color emission in both solution and solid states

A series of triphenylethylene-based luminophoric molecules were efficiently synthesized. The substituent effect of the fluorophores on their photophysical properties was then investigated. Consequently, it was found that longer conjugated system and larger molecular dipole of the donor-π-acceptor fluorophores could result in bathochromic shifts of UV-vis absorption and emission bands, so do the Stokes shifts. Especially, full-color fluorescent emissions in both solution and solid states could be achieved by changing conjugation length and substituents with different electron-donating or accepting abilities in the triphenylethylene skeleton. The density functional theory calculations further demonstrated that with the increase of the electron-donating or accepting abilities of the substituents, the energy gaps of the fluorophores gradually decreased, which elucidated the substituent effect of the organic fluorophores on their photophysical properties.

Distyrylanthracene derivatives, AnP3 and AnP3P with triphenylethylene end-groups, and AnP4 and AnP4P with tetraphenylethylene end-groups, were synthesized and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, photoluminescence, ultraviolet-visible absorption, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and other techniques. The results show that the piezofluorochromic properties of these four aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) compounds were influenced significantly by the structures of the end-groups in the molecules. The AnP4 and AnP4P derivatives with tetraphenylethylene end-groups exhibited distinct piezofluorochromic properties, which might be switched reversibly upon pressing or annealing because of crystalline-amorphous phase transformation. Thus, we propose that those AIEE compounds that contain steric hindrance groups may exhibit evident piezofluorochromic activities.
Biopolymer-metal complex wool-Pd as a highly active heterogeneous catalyst for Heck reaction in aqueous media

experimental part, p. 250 - 256 (2011/02/27)
Heterogeneous palladium catalysts, a biopolymer complex wool-Pd, have been applied in water-mediated coupling reactions of aryl bromides without assistance of any phosphine ligands. The catalyst was characterized by XPS, ICP. The results showed that aryl bromides could carry out the coupling reaction with a variety of alkenes at 80 °C, in aqueous media under atmospheric condition. More importantly, the cheap catalyst is stable, which shows negligible metal leaching, and retain good activity for at least ten successive runs without any additional activation treatment. This approach would be very useful from a practical viewpoint.
