A new nitrating agent, nitronium ethyl sulfate, was prepared by reaction of ethyl nitrate with sulfuric anhydride. The agent has a ionic structure.New reactions of electrophilic addition of nitronium ethyl sulfate to a series of acyclic and mono-, bi-, and polycyclic alkenes, dienes, and trienes were studied; these reactions provide a synthetic approach to ethyl sulfate derivatives of nitro alcohols. The composition of the reaction products was analyzed in detail, and their structures were rigorously confirmed.Factors that govern the stoichiometry of addition and the directions of transformations of the carbon skeleton were revealed.
