General Description

7,8-dihydrobenzo(a)pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is formed during the incomplete combustion of organic matter, such as fossil fuels and wood. It is a known carcinogen and is classified as a group 1 human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). 7,8-dihydrobenzo(a)pyrene is commonly found in air pollution, tobacco smoke, and grilled or charred foods. It is metabolized in the body to form reactive intermediates that can bind to DNA and cause mutations, leading to the development of cancer. Exposure to 7,8-dihydrobenzo(a)pyrene has been linked to an increased risk of lung, skin, and bladder cancer, as well as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Therefore, efforts to reduce human exposure to this hazardous chemical are important for public health and safety.
