UV-VIS absorption spectra of 2-arylazoimidazoles (A) and 1-N-methyl-2-arylazoimidazoles (B) are discussed and compared with those of the corresponding trans-azobenzenes which were extensively examined in the past. 1-N-Methyl group in B exerts a slight steric hindrance similar to that in 2-methylazobenzene and also diminishes electron-accepting properties of 1-N-methylimidazol-2-ylazo group, as compared with unsubstituted imidazol-2-ylazo group.From spectral substituent and solvent shifts of the K-band in the spectra of monoazo dyes under discussion it has been deduced that the two afore-mentioned complex substituent groups contitute weaker antiauxochromes, as compared with the phenylazo group.
