Cyclodehydration of 2-carboxymethylthio derivatives of imidazolo(4,5-d)pyrimidones (VI and XII) with pyridine-acetic anhydride has been studied.While VIa, b give N-7-acylated mesoionic systems (VIIIa, b), VIc yields a non-acylated compound (VIIIb) which has also been obtained through an alternative route.In contrast, isolation of mesoionic compound from VId is not successful and propable reasons for this failure are discussed.Structures assigned to mesoionic compounds and their precursors are confirmed by relevant spectral data (UV, IR and MS).
