Reaction of isobutyllithium with 3-phenylbutyric acid results in the formation of 2-phenyl-6-methylheptan-4-one (III), which on reaction with oxalyl chloride under Friedel-Crafts condition furnishes ar-todomatuic acid (V).Work-up of the above reaction with dry methanol instead of water gives ar-juvabione (VI).
