Organosulfur and organoselenium mediated reductive cleavage of certain γ-enonelactones

Reduction of the alkyl-oxygen bond of several γ-anonelactones is readily accomplished in high yield with PhSeNa or PhSNa reagents. The reaction has been extended to several sesquiterpenoid lactones of the santonin and isophotosantonin groups.
