Complex formation between SbPhX2, SbPh2X and SbPh2X3, where X = Cl or Br, and the nitrogen donors pyridine, 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline is described. With monophenylantimony(III) halides, pyridine gives complexes containing one and two molecules of pyridine, but only 1:1 compounds are obtained with the diphenyl monohalides. 2,2′-Bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline give 1:1 complexes with both mono-and diphenyl halides and the structure of SbPhCl2 · bpy has been determined. Pyridine gives 1:1 compounds with SbPh2X3 for X = Br or Cl, while diphenylantimony tribromide and 2,2′ bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline gives 1:2 complexes. A stable 1:2 complex is also obtained between 1,10-phenanthroline and diphenylantimony trichloride, but the initial product with 2,2′-bipyridine is apparently hydrolytically unstable and gives bpyH [SbPh2Cl4] on crystallization. The structure of this compound has also been obtained. Copyright
