8-Isopropyl-5-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2-naphthaldehyde (IX) obtained from the known 8-isopropyl-5-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthol (VIII) serves as a common intermediate for the synthesis of ar-γ-muurolen-15-oic acid (cadalene-β-carboxylic acid) (IV) and 7-hydroxycadalenal (XI), a constituent of several elm woods.Dehydrogenation of IX to the naphthaldehyde (X), followed by its oxidation gives IV, while allylic oxidtion of IX furnishes in one-step the hydroxycadalenal (XI).
