These are available from natural sources, or by application of the asymmetric Sharpless dihydroxylation to vinylogous esters 6, subsequent reduction, halogenation and elimination. This protocol allows the synthesis of highly functionalized allylic alcohols, which can be used in asymmetric Claisen rearrangements.
