A pentacyclic triterpene, designated eupacannol (1), possessing a new skeletal type, has been isolated from the whole plant of Eupatorium cannabinum Linn. (Fam. Asteraceae) in 0.0055% yield. Its structure having a new modified friedlane skeleton has been established as 1 on the basis of 1H NMR (using paramagnetic shift reagent also) and mass spectral evidence, and chemical studies. β-Amyrin and an anthraquinone derivative physcion have also been isolated. The molecular conformations of eupacannol (1) and friedelan-7β-ol (5) have been discussed.
