Electrochemical investigations on liquid-state polymerizing systems: Case of sol-gel polymerization of transition metal alkoxides

The polymerization kinetics of zirconium propoxide (and in a few cases of titanium butoxide) were studied in various conditions by following the diffusion of an electroactive probe attached to the metal center. Two different probes were considered, implyi
Modified electrodes from organic-inorganic gels issued from the polycondensation of functionalized zirconium alkoxides

, p. 1023 - 1030 (2008/10/08)
Modified electrodes have been prepared from functionalized xerogels issued from zirconium alkoxides. Sols are formed by co-condensation of complexed zirconium alkoxides, having a functionalized ligand attached to a ferrocene moiety, either alone or together with a classical ligand such as acetylacetone. They have been deposited onto platinum and allowed the fabrication of modified electrodes with very stable electrochemical properties. The electrochemical response of the gels has been found to strongly depend on the ferrocene concentration, but only weakly on the complexing strength of the bonding; except for one system, there is no apparent release of any ligand from the dried xerogels. Special attention has been paid to the dynamics of the electron transfer through the xerogels, and a quantitative analysis has been performed in several cases. Contrary to what is observed with functionalized silica gels, the diffusion coefficient of the charge transfer decreases progressively with the dilution of the electroactive sites in the gel, as expected for a rigid functionalized polymer.
