Synthesis of Copper-containing Polytriazines by Cyclotrimerization of 2,2-Bis(4-cyanatophenyl) propane in CuCl2 Solution

Reaction of 2,2-bis(4-cyanatophenyl)propane with CuCl2 in absolute acetone was studied over a wide range of reactant concentrations. At an equimolar ratio of the reactants, the reaction yields the cyanate complex C17H14Cl2CuN2O2, whereas at a large excess of the ligand the polymeric triazine complex (C36H28Cu2N6O6) n is formed. A scheme of polycyclotrimerization of the copper(II) cyanate complex is proposed. Copper dichloride is a considerably more efficient catalyst of cyanate trimerization, as compared to tertiary amines.
