Procedures for the efficient synthesis and handling of [ethoxy((benzyloxy)methyl)carbene]pentacarbonylchromium(0) have been developed. Photolysis in the presence of the optically active ene carbamate 12 followed by Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and oxazolidinone elimination gave (R)-(+)-5-ethoxy-5-((benzyloxy)methyl)-2(5H)-furanone in good yield and with high enantiomeric purity. This compound provides a potential template for the synthesis of 4'-substituted nucleoside analogs.
