Secondary amines react with α-bromocinnamaldehyde to yield various 2,3-bisdialkylamino-3-phenylpropanals.These diaminoaldehydes undergo two competitive rections respectively leading to α-aminocinnamaldehyde and 1,2-diamino-ethylene.Experimental conditions selectively yielding one of these compound have been studied.With 2,3-dibromobutanal the same reaction does not afford diaminoaldehyde but 1,2-diaminoethylene and a new compound, 1,2,3-triamino-1-butene.A possible reaction mechanism is discussed and a new, general one-pot synthesis of 1,2-diaminoethylene from 2-butenal with good yields is described.
