Reaction of mer- with AgBF4 and tetracyanoethylene (tcne) in tetrahydrofuran yielded the unexpected product trans-, where tcva is tricyanovinyl alcohol (1,1,2-tricyano-2-hydroxyethylene).Structural characterization of trans- was accomplished through IR spectroscopy, fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystallographic study revealed that tcva is ?-bound to the Os atom via nitrogen and that the OH group occupies the cis position with respect to the metal-bound nitrogen. The frontier orbitals of trans- were investgated by electrochemistry and UV/VIS, IR and EPR spectrochemical studies, which revealed that the complex is best described at trans-IICl2(PEt2Ph)3(tcva)0>.
