Novel polyaza heterocycles, dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]quinolino[2,3-h]phenazines, were synthesized via a regiocontrolled condensation between 5,6-phendione and 3,4-diaminoacridine derivatives.

The identity test for ethacridine lactate with nitrous acid, prescribed in several pharmacopeias, gives rise to a diazotization of the amino group in 6-position yielding the diazonium salt, which was isolated as tetrafluoroborate and undoubtedly identified, In the same manner from proflavine the monodiazonium derivative results as tetrafluoroborate. These diazonium compounds are also responsible for the colour in the test solutions following from a comparison of the UV/VIS spectra. Semiempirical calculations with a series of acridine derivatives show a very good agreement of the theoretical and observed wavelengths of maximal absorption, Therefore, the solution owes its colour to the diazonium chromophore and nest to intermolecular interactions of the heteroaromatic ring systems.
