The reaction of Ir4(CO)11L (L = PMe2Ph, PMePh2, PPh3, AsPh3) with excess of diolefin (norbornadiene, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cyclooctatetraene) and Me3NO in THF yielded Ir4(CO)9L(η4-diolefin) as well as the minor products Ir4(CO)7L(η4-diolefin)2. For most of these mixed-ligand cluster compounds, two stereoisomers were observed in solution by 31P and 1H NMR with L occupying either an axial or a radial site of a basal Ir atom. The solid-state structures of Ir4(CO)9(PMe 2Ph)(2,3-η:5,6-η-norbornadiene) (1) and Ir4(CO)9-(PPh3) (2,3-η:5,6-η-norbornadiene) (3) show that the diolefin chelates a basal Ir atom in both species while the PMe2Ph ligand in 1 is located on a radial site and the PPh3 ligand in 3 occupies an axial site. Crystal data for 1: space group P21/n, a = 9.947 (3) A?, b = 13.677 (2) A?, c = 20.951 (3) A?, β= 96.18 (2)°, Z = 4. Crystal data for 3: space group P21/n, a = 9.808 (2) A?, b = 33.682 (4) A?, c = 10.769 (2) A?, β= 103.12 (2)°, Z = 4.
