The formation of esters from silyl ethers and acyl chlorides is catalysed by quaternary ammonium chlorides, the other halide ions being less efficient. Evidence for the intermediacy of the alcohol formed by protodesilylation of the silyl ether is presented. Excellent regioselectivities (>99%) were obtained in the monoacylations of the bis-silyl ether 3 made from 1-?-benzylglycerol. Acta Chemica Scandinavica 1997.
