Synthesis of M=M (M=Mo, W) doubly bonded trans/syn-(η5RC5H4)2M2(CO)2(μ-SePh)2 and trans/anti (η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)2(μ-SePh)2 isomers via reaction of M=M triply bonded complexes (η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)4 (M=Mo,W) with diphenyl diselenide Ph2Se2

The metal-metal triply bonded complexes (η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)4 reacted with Ph2Se2 in refluxing toluene to afford the metal-metal doubly bonded isomers trans/syn-(η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)2(μ-SePh)2 (1a M=Mo, R=H; 2a M=Mo, R=MeCO; 3a M=Mo, R=MeO2C; 4a M=Mo, R=EtO2C; 5a M=W, R=EtO2C) and trans/anti-(η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)2(μ-SePh)2 (2b M=Mo, R=MeCO; 3b M=Mo, R=MeO2C; 4b M=Mo, R=EtO2C; 5b M=W, R=EtO2C). In addition, the isomers 2a-b and 3a-b could be also produced through the reaction of (η5-RC5H4)2M2(CO)4 (M=Mo, R=MeCO, MeO2C) with Ph2Se2 in the solid state at ca. 110°C in comparable total yields, but with a much higher isomer ratio (trans/syn:trans/anti) than through the corresponding solution reaction. All the isomers are new and have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H NMR, (77)Se NMR and mass spectroscopic methods.
