Synthetic Approaches Towards 5H-Indenopyridines

A facile synthetic approach to 2-alkoxy-4-aryl-5H-indenopyridine-3-carbonitriles 2a-l via alcoholic KOH catalyzed addition of malononitrile to 2-arylmethylidene-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ones 1a-f is described. (2-Arylmethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene)dicyanomethanes 6a-f were isolated besides 2a-l in all the reactions carried out.The reaction proceeds through Michael addition of the active methylene compound to 1 affording finally 2 and not the isomeric 9H-indenopyridines 3.Further confirmation for the structure of 2 was achieved through alcoholic KOH catalyzed addition of indan-1-one to arylmethylidenemalononitriles 8.
