Salicylaldehyde, also known as 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H6O2. It is a colorless to pale yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Derived from salicylic acid through an oxidation process, salicylaldehyde is an important intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and chemical products. It is used in the production of aspirin, as well as in the manufacture of certain dyes and resins. Due to its aromatic and aldehyde properties, it exhibits a distinct, sweet odor and is also employed in the flavoring industry.
