The high reactivity of the unbridged Ni-Ni and Te-Te bonds in the organonickel dimer [{(η5-Cp)NiPEt3}2] (1) and the ditelluride [{MesTe}2] (2) (Mes = C6H3Me3) leads to the formation of the dinuclear nickel tellurato complex [(η5-Cp)Ni-TeMesPEt3] (3) via metathesis reaction. The structure of 3 is determined by an X-ray analysis whose prominent feature is the unbridged Ni-Te bond (2.485(1) A). Complete solution NMR characterization of 3 (1H, 13C, 31P, 125Te) is reported. 3 exhibits an unbridged Ni-Te bond which is cleaved by stannylene SnR2 (R = {CH(SiMe3)2}) (6) to form the tetranuclear tin tellurolato complex 7.
