The bidentate nitrogen donor ligand 2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole (PBH) reacts with AuCl3 and Me2AuCl to form five-coordinated complexes and , respectively. However, a structurally similar ligand 3,5-dimethyl-1-(2'-pyridyl)pyrazole (DMPP) forms four-coordinated ionic complexes and with AuCl3 and Me2AuCl, respectively. Both these ligands, however, form rather unusual three-coordinated trigonal Au(I) complexes of the formulae X where L = PBH or DMPP and X = ClO4(-) or BF4(-).All the complexes have been characterised by their analytical data, electrical conductivities, IR and Moessbauer spectra and in suitable cases also by the 31P NMR spectra.
