The condensation of the amino groups of 4-(4′-nitrophenylazo)aniline or of 4,4′-diaminoazo-benzene with 2-oxocarboxylates at chlorido bridged half-sandwich complexes [(C 5Me 5)MCl 2] 2 (M = Rh, Ir), [(p-cymene)RuCl 2] 2 or of [(C 5Me 5)(Co(CO)I 2] provides a convenient way to attach azodyes to a metal ion via an 2-iminocarboxylate ligand.
