2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-Octafluoropentyl benzyl sulfide reacts with tris(dimethylamino)-N-ethylimidophosphate or NaOH to form 1-benzylthio-2,3,3,4,4,5,5-heptafluoro-1-pentene or 1-benzylthio-3,3,4,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-pentyne, respectively. When treated with trimethylamine, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentyl benzyl sulfoxide and 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5- octafluoropentyl benzyl sulfone are dehydrofluorinated to produce the corresponding 2,3,3,4,4,5,5-heptafluoro-1-pentenes. The latter react with amines with substitution of the vinyl fluorine atom. With secondary amines and ammonia, 2-amino-substituted 1-benzylsulfinyl(sulfonyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-pentenes form; with primary amines, the reaction yields 1-benzylsulfonyl-2-imino-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoropentanes.
