Quaternary 1,2,4-thiadiazolium salts containing an active methylene group on N2 undergo ring expansion on treatment with bases to yield 2H-1,3,5-thiadiazine. Treatment with triethylamine or heating of 2-arylsulfonyl-6-diphenylamino-2H-1,3,5-thiadiazines results in migration of the arylsulfonyl group to the ring sulfur atom, followed by contraction of the six-membered ring, to afford new 5-mercaptoimidazole derivatives whose structure was confirmed by X-ray analysis.
