A para-terphenyl diphosphine was employed to support a dipalladium(I) moiety. Unlike previously reported dipalladium(I) species, the present system provides a single molecular hemisphere for binding of ligands across two metal centers, enabling the characterization and comparison of the binding of a wide variety of saturated and unsaturated organic molecules. The dipalladium(I) terphenyl diphosphine toluene-capped complex was synthesized from a dipalladium(I) hexaacetonitrile precursor in the presence of toluene. The palladium centers display interactions with the π-systems of the central ring of the terphenyl unit and that of the toluene. Exchange of toluene for anisole, 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene, thiophenes, pyrroles, or furans resulted in well-defined π-bound complexes which were studied by crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and density functional theory. Structural characterization shows that the interactions of the dipalladium unit with the central arene of the diphosphine does not vary significantly in this series allowing for a systematic comparison of the binding of the incoming ligands to the dipalladium moiety. Several of the complexes exhibit rare μ-η2:η2 or μ-η2: η1(O or S) bridging motifs. Hydrogenation of the thiophene and benzothiophene adducts was demonstrated to proceed at room temperature. The relative binding strength of the neutral ligands was determined by competition experiments monitored by NMR spectroscopy. The relative equilibrium constants for ligand substitution span over 13 orders of magnitude. This represents the most comprehensive analysis to date of the relative binding of heterocycles and unsaturated ligands to bimetallic sites. Binding interactions were computationally studied with electrostatic potentials and molecular orbital analysis. Anionic ligands were also demonstrated to form π-bound complexes.

Fluoroarenes can be selectively deuterated by H/D exchange with common deuterated solvents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkali metal carbonate or, for the less acidic arenes, stoichiometric quantities of potassium phosphate. This is a susta

C-H borylation is a powerful and atom-efficient method for converting affordable and abundant chemicals into versatile organic reagents used in the production of fine chemicals and functional materials. Herein we report a facile C-H borylation of aromatic and olefinic C-H bonds with 2-aminophenylboranes. Computational and experimental studies reveal that the metal-free C-H insertion proceeds via a frustrated Lewis pair mechanism involving heterolytic splitting of the C-H bond by cooperative action of the amine and boryl groups. The adapted geometry of the reactive B and N centers results in an unprecedentently low kinetic barrier for both insertion into the sp2-C-H bond and intramolecular protonation of the sp2-C-B bond in 2-ammoniophenyl(aryl)- or -(alkenyl)borates. This common reactivity pattern serves as a platform for various catalytic reactions such as C-H borylation and hydrogenation of alkynes. In particular, we demonstrate that simple 2-aminopyridinium salts efficiently catalyze the C-H borylation of hetarenes with catecholborane. This reaction is presumably mediated by a borenium species isoelectronic to 2-aminophenylboranes.

The potential for an organocatalytic asymmetric stereoisomerization or alkene isomerization as atom-economic reaction with minimal structural change was investigated. The McCormack cycloaddition of 1,4-diarylbuta-1,3-dienes with (dialkylamino)dichlorophosphane and aluminum trichloride gives meso-2,5-diaryl-1-(dialkylamino)-1-oxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-phospholes, which were identified as suitable substrates for asymmetric isomerization to (1R,5R)-2,5-diaryl-1-(dialkylamino)-1-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-phospholes in the presence of bifunctional organocatalysts (cinchona alkaloids, Takemoto catalyst) in up to 91% ee and quantitative yield. The substrate range and the mechanism of the catalysis were studied. The reaction involves proton abstraction by the base, but a primary deuterium KIE is absent. Enriched (1R,5R)-1-(diethylamino)- 1-oxo-2,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-phosphole was hydrolyzed to (5R)-1-hydroxy-1-oxo-2,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-phosphole, which was hydrogenated diastereoselectively under dissolving metal conditions to give (2R,5R)-1-hydroxy-1-oxo-2,5-diphenylphospholane (Fiaud's acid) in preference to meso-1-hydroxy-1-oxo-2,5-diphenylphospholane. An asymmetric catalytic total synthesis of Fiaud's acid, which is a building block for chiral phospholane synthesis, has been realized in five steps from thiophene, using nickel-catalyzed Wenkert arylation, McCormack cycloaddition, asymmetric dihydro-1H-phosphole isomerization, hydrolysis, and diastereo-selective hydrogenation. Use of Simple Test Reactions to Characterise the Catalytic Activity of a Commercial CoO-MoO3-Al2O3 Catalyst

Exchange of thiophene with D2 and reactions of deuterium-labelled propene and isobutene, followed using a combination of mass spectometry and microwave spectroscopy, have been used to characterise the catalytic nature of a commercial CoO-MoO3-Al2O3 (CMA) catalyst. The results indicate that the activity of partially sulphided CMA, produced by exposure to H2S or by hydrodesulphurization (h.d.s.) of ethanethiol, closely resembles that of unsupported MoS2.Thus, sulphided-CMA shows high selectivity/activity for exchange of the α hydrogens in thiophene and catalyses double bond migration in propene through half-hydrogenated intermediates, activity characteristic of MoS2, whereas oxide-CMA is much less active for α exchange and shows Lewis acid type activity for the latter reaction. It appears that a CMA catalyst during h.d.s. may usefully be described as "dual-functional", with MoS2 supported on, and stabilised by, an acidic support.
