Gold(II) complexes were synthesized by reduction of corresponding gold(III) complexes with excess sulfur-containing ligands. The complexes were studied by ESR spectroscopy to show that the possibility of formation of gold(II) complexes is determined by the nature of substituents at the donor sulfur atoms and by the metal-ring size.
